This book was an introduction to a master story teller. They might not be living in paradise, but at least they are not living in the world of Diary of the War of the Pig. It deserves to be more widely known, and, in fact, Buoy Casares deserves a larger readership. Written almost a decade before the death squads disrupted Argentina, it is the gripping first-person narrative of an old man caught in a wave of persecutions against all old people, and might well stand as a metaphor for the murkier currents of Latin American society today.
